This example follows an assessment to add a workspace invitation flow to an existing application. The brief allows AI tools and asks the candidate to explain their choices.
The submission details below are fictional. Replace them with observations from the candidate’s actual work. These are prompts to explore, not a script or a candidate recommendation.
Architecture & simplicity
The candidate kept the invitation flow in the existing application and removed the proposed queue.
Understand the constraints behind that choice.
- Explore when a queue would become justified.
- Bring up failure recovery and the team’s ability to operate the solution.
- Look for the trade-off they deliberately accepted.
Removing a queue is not automatically the better decision. Look for an explanation that fits the application, expected load and team.
Verification & ownership
The submission includes a test for an expired invite, but cross-workspace access is not demonstrated.
Explore what is verified and what remains uncertain.
- Bring up the boundary between two customer workspaces.
- Ask them to walk through how they would check it.
- Notice whether they distinguish assumptions from observed behaviour.
An absent test leaves a question to explore. It does not, by itself, tell you what the candidate understands.
Adapting the approach
The original brief covered one invitation at a time.
Explore how their reasoning changes with a new requirement.
- Introduce a request to invite 500 colleagues at once.
- Explore what they would change first and what can stay.
- Leave room for questions about how your team would approach this work.
Give them time to think and clarify the requirement. The useful evidence is how they work through the change.
Record what you learned.
Capture the decision you discussed, the evidence the candidate showed and anything still unresolved. Refer back to the abilities you agreed to assess before the interview.
Keep the same core topics across candidates and adapt the follow-up to their submissions. Leave room for their questions about your team. The hiring decision stays with you.
